2005 Grenache Rosé, Annadel Estate, Sonoma Valley

SOLD OUT: this wine is no longer available.
At Westwood we produce only great Pinot Noir and Syrah. And (now) occasionally a little Grenache Rosé.
When we planted our Annadel Estate Vineyard in 2002 we included a little acreage dedicated to Rhone blending grapes. This fruit is destined to be blended into our varietal Estate Syrah to increase its complexity and distinctiveness.
The 2005 Grenache Rose is the result of a saignée de cuve from our second crop off the Grenache planted at the Estate. This clone of Grenache came to us from Chateau Beaucastel via Tablas Creek. It produces a lovely red wine, which benefited in 2005 from having this volume of juice drawn off the fermenter after 12 hours to make the rosé.
This is a wine we have styled, in respectful tribute, along the lines of a favorite of the dry rosé cognoscenti, the Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé. The alcohol is moderate at 12.3%. Our wine was barrel-fermented and stirred on lees for 5 months to enhance the fullness on the palate, and bottled with the absolute minimum of manipulation, unfined and unfiltered, so it does appear slightly hazy in bright light.
